Economics is a fascinating discipline. Teaching and research in economics is a "calling" I would argue. We want to continually engage the profession and raise the level of discourse. Blogs can help us "think aloud", but ultimately I think that exercise needs to be constrained against professional activities. Blogs, in short, cannot be seen as a substitute for more traditional publishing activity.

I would advice graduate students .... to focus their energies on learning the discipline inside and out, learning how to teach the subject to students ...., learning how to research, and learning how to write for professional audiences as well as the general public. Don't worry about being clever, focus instead on being clear. Don't worry about careerism, focus instead on tracking truth and being correct. If you have questions, ask them. If you have ideas, excellent but remember that "thinking without publishing is daydreaming." And who really want to hear your dreams beyond your friends, family and perhaps therapist?!
